Do you already have an education, work experience and are you thinking about how to take a new career course? The next step on the road to success may be a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) |
A new career course with an MBA
What will the economy be like after the crisis? The managers of the future will take on the “job of making mistakes.”
International schools of management are one of the opportunities to take a step “from a place to a career” and take a leading position.
Part-time or off-production
As a rule, the world’s leading business schools offer various ways to obtain a diploma: full-time MBA Program, Executive MBA program, as well as distance-learning programs (Distance-learning MBA) and short-term seminars (Master Classes). The period of study, depending on the initial training and the specific program, takes from one to five years.
This year, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, which offers MBA programs, enrolls 26 students from 15 countries. Almost every year, among the students of the course are several representatives of the CIS. An “active” ESMT student and a graduate of the Berlin Business School, who graduated two years ago, shared their experience with Deutsche Welle.
For new knowledge in business
Andrey Shapovalov, 38, is the most “adult” MBA student at the ESMT Berlin School of Management. He graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow State Institute. He has two higher educations. The first specialty is an oceanographer. The last place of work is the Russian company Yandex.
Deutsche Welle: Why did you decide to go to management school?
Andrei Shapovalov: There was a desire to get a general education in business, because immediately after graduating from university I started doing science. He worked at the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences for more than five years. And in 2000 he became interested in the Internet. There was no money in science, and when he got married, he decided to go completely into the Internet.
Why did you choose Germany to get an MBA?
Before choosing a business school, I carefully studied the market. Russian programs are still more focused on “internal use”, so I chose the European school.
What should you pay attention to in the first place when choosing a business school?
The overall image of the MBA school, accreditation and rankings can help in making a decision. I only considered one-year programs. These programs are offered mainly in Europe, even in America there are not many annuals. It should be taken into account the fact that during the study a person is disconnected from work and does not earn. Both material and intangible sacrifices have to be made. Wife and children – in Moscow. I can meet them only on vacation.
What expectations do you have for receiving a diploma?
There is a lot of research confirming that the MBA pays off, but I know that you should not expect a sharp increase in salaries, especially now, during the crisis. I want to get an interesting job and sufficient compensation for their costs. During this year, I not only acquired new knowledge, but also structured the ones I had already accumulated during my studies and many years of work experience. Training in the school of management helps to assess their own capabilities, as well as the situation on the market, what specialists are in demand now.
Are your plans for the future a career in Russia?
Of course, it is impossible to apply the knowledge and experience that I am now gaining in Germany in Russian conditions one on one. Much depends on the field of activity. In the information technology industry, companies operate almost identically. But in some areas there is still an adaptation. In accounting, for example, there are still differences. After graduating from school, I will consider all options – both in Russia and in Europe.
Education that can change a career
Natalia Mylovanova, 28 years old. Graduate of the MBA program of the Berlin School of Management ESMT 2007. She received two higher educations in Ukraine. Works in France for Alstom, a manufacturer of power equipment and rail transport.
Deutsche Welle: Why did you need an MBA with two higher educations?
Natalia Milovanova: I have been dreaming about this since I was 18 years old. After graduating from two institutes in Kiev and Kerch, I realized that theoretically there was nowhere to “jump”, but I still wanted to get an MBA. You could choose the program in Ukraine, but the ratings left much to be desired.
Who makes sense to invest in such education?
If you want to work at the international level, you should also choose an international school. However, it is difficult to single out the target audience. This is an education that can change a career. For example, if a person with a medical education wants to move from a functional role to a manager, this is an ideal program for reorientation.
Didn’t you have to regret the financial costs?
My investment paid off. To date, I have definitely paid off my studies at the business school, especially since I spent the minimum amount since I became a scholarship winner. Halfway through, you begin to understand that studying is, of course, good, but you also have to look for a job. I started sending resumes after six months in Berlin, and received the offer at the end of the program. Some searched longer after release. However, almost all graduates of my stream found a job and were satisfied with their salary.
Now I hold the position of commercial offer manager, preparing tender projects for railway operators around the world. I work with clients in Finland, Kazakhstan, India. My task is to coordinate different groups, such as engineering with commercial, financial and accounting.
You received your first education in Ukraine, improved your skills in Germany, went to work in France … Is it possible to apply the international experience you have gained in Russia or Ukraine?
This is a sick question. I think this knowledge can be applied, perhaps, in such big cities as Moscow or St. Petersburg. As for Ukraine, I believe that most companies are not ready for this yet. There, management focuses on everyday problems, while in the West, managers solve problems of a completely different level.
Their focus is on issues such as employee motivation, leadership development of managers. But the problems of funding or lack of resources are a lower level of problems, and they are solved by the lower level of managers. Russia and Ukraine have yet to raise a new buy compare contrast essay generation of managers so that they can work as in the West.

Political parties and party systems: concepts, functions and types. Abstract
The concept of a political party. Classification of political parties. The concept and typology of party systems. The role and functions of parties in socio-political life. Formation of multiparty system in modern Ukraine. The prospect of forming a party system
The concept of a political party. Political life in modern society is unthinkable without parties. Parties give it dynamics, because they are the arena of competition of political courses, ideas that express the interests of different social groups. Knowledge of parties as a social institution, their place and role in socio-political life are not only theoretical but also practical.
The term “party” (from the Latin partio – divide, divide) translated from Latin means part of a large community. Modern political parties were preceded by their prototypes – the proto-party. It is believed that parties emerged at the same time as politics, that is, in a slave-owning society. With the development of slave-owning relations, the deepening of the social differentiation of society, including the ruling class itself, there were not enough state political structures to exercise power.
